How do i clean poly hives?Updated 2 years ago

The hives are best cleaned with a solution of washing soda. This will dissolve propolis and clean off any dirt etc. Hive tools can be used to remove propolis and wax, however care must be taken as it will dig into the polystyrene if the tool is not kept flat across the surface.

Sterilisation of the hive can be carried out with a solution of bleach, normally a 10% solution is recommended. Bleach containing hypochlorite is required for sterilisation against AFB. Wear suitable protection, including eye protection, when cleaning your hive. It is important to clean the hives of propolis and wax before sterilisation.
